The Lab,[1] also known as Labo[2] or Orbital Satellite Base No. 6,[1] is a background location in side materials for NieR:Automata.
Overview
The Lab was an orbital facility for the Army of Humanity's research and development of new android models. It held an array of advanced developmental tools and talented staff including Zinnia, the Chief of Research and Development.[1]
The Lab also housed the first prototype YoRHa units, including No.2, No.4, No.9, and No.21.[1][3]
Background
The Lab began operation in 11815 to replace Kaguya, the previous sixth orbital base, after it was destroyed during experiments with a Machine Core. Research resumed on the Lab and led to the creation of black box technology in 11928.[2]
Sometime prior to 11932, YoRHa-type androids were designed by Zinnia, the Army of Humanity's Chief of Research and Development.[4][5][Note 1] The new androids were approved for production in April 11932 and resided at the Lab for monitoring and developmental purposes.[2][6]
In July of 11937, No.9 discovered the existence of Project YoRHa and the truth about black boxes after restoring deleted files. He became furious and, within a few dozen hours, rigged the Lab facility with incendiaries and murdered members of the crew along with fellow YoRHa prototypes.[1] The attack resulted in damage to the orbital base and the destruction of the YoRHa units.[2]
However, prior to the Lab's destruction, plans for the Bunker, YoRHa-type androids, and orders for their automated production were sent to the server on the moon. This also included a backdoor into the Bunker's schematics newly installed by No.9, intended to destroy the Bunker near the conclusion of Project YoRHa.[7][8]
Trivia
- Flashbacks of scenes from the Lab are shown in NieR:Automata Ver1.1a Episode 23 when the Red Girls show the truth of Project YoRHa to 9S.
