Project One Wing was a venture undertaken by androids in the Kingdom of Day around the end of the 60th century.

Background

In the year 2003, a young girl by the name of Eleanor was taken to an undisclosed location to be treated for a mysterious illness. Years passed with little to no progress, until in a desperate bid to cure her, Eleanor was infused with D tissue - genetic data taken from the Dragon. Her illness was seemingly cured, and the only initially notable side effect was her eyes changing to red.

However, as White Chlorination Syndrome spread throughout the world and attacks by Legion grew more frequent, the facility housing Eleanor, an undersea laboratory, was abandoned. Eleanor herself was placed into cryogenic sleep, and before long, the facility and Eleanor with it were forgotten.

Thousands of years later after the extinction of humanity, in the Year 5980, androids discover the undersea laboratory and find Eleanor still in her stasis pod. She is awoken and suffers from complete amnesia, and is only able to be told her name because it was engraved on the stasis chamber. With no knowledge of who she was or what had happened, the androids come to the mistaken assumption from observation of her D tissue that she was a biological weapon from the Old World. They name Eleanor the "Eldest Daughter" and take control of the facility to create clones of her to use as more weapons.[1]

Eleanor's "Sisters"

Through unknown means, Eleanor is cloned within the same research facility many times over. Her clones, whom she views as her sisters, possess many of the same traits as Eleanor herself after her augmentation with D tissue, and while she had pale skin and dark hair, her clones exhibit different physical characteristics such as tan skin and white hair.

Each of Eleanor's clones is created in pods resembling standing coffins and referred to as such. They are born in a state of stasis and maintained within a fluid called the Sea of Origin - the very same material originally used to cultivate D tissue. After enough of a certain particle (implied to be maso) is removed from the coffin, a clone is able to awaken. Each clone is born with imprinted knowledge of combat and weapons training, and they were administered drugs that forcibly matured their bodies quickly. After successful missions, clones would return to their coffins until awakened again.

Like Eleanor herself, her clones exhibit superhuman abilities, such as enhanced senses and durability due to the presence of the Dragon's DNA mixed with their own, but unlike their genetic template, they lack the ability to sleep and do not experience dreams, and the majority of them have no desires beyond functioning as weapons and experience little to no emotion. Nonetheless, Eleanor loved them all dearly and dutifully gave each and every one of them a name.

Upon death, a clone's body would crystalize like a statue, and other clones were capable of accessing the deceased clones' memories through interaction with their crystalized remains. Short of unnatural death through violent means, it is possible that the clones would have very long or potentially indefinite lifespans, as Eleanor herself remained youthful despite having lived outside of cryogenic sleep for at least 92 years.

For reasons unknown to the researchers heading Project One Wing, they encountered occasional abnormalities among Eleanor's clones. Specimen 6, whom Eleanor had given the name Eliza, suffered an undisclosed incident in which she became unstable, but she recovered her consciousness. However, Specimen 16 also exhibited undisclosed strange symptoms. Such incidents would continue and expand in severity, up to Specimen 116 and at least one other before her becoming completely liquefied. The only commonality the researchers were able to find among unstable clones was that all of them had production numbers ending in 6.

Specimen 123, whom Eleanor would give the name Noelle, experienced a unique anomaly that did not seem to render her unstable, but she was capable of sleep and dreaming, and she would later learn that she experienced emotion even if she had difficulty understanding what it was. After an incident of Noelle stating "The wings have already awakened..." she was placed into temporary cryogenic sleep.

Failure of the Project

In the year 6072, one of the android researchers in charge of the facility discovered a note left thousands of years ago by a "D.U." apologizing for their failure and begging whoever would find the note to keep his daughter safe. As a result, the android researcher discovers that Eleanor is not in fact a biological weapon, but instead a human who was implanted with D tissue in order to prolong her life. Wracked with guilt for what the androids had done to Eleanor through their misunderstanding of her purpose, the director of the facility immediately halted production of any further clones and resolved to tell her the truth of her origins.[1]

When Eleanor was told where she really came from, her memories returned to her. The emotional shock effected a violent reaction with the D tissue within her, and she changed form into a large flying creature with scales. She went on a mindless rampage and killed all the researchers in the facility and every one of her sisters except for Noelle, who remained safe in stasis. From her body oozed a strange liquid that took on vaguely humanoid shapes and would attack anything they saw on sight. The undersea research facility collapses.[1]

Over a hundred years later, in 6201, Noelle awakened from stasis.[1] Taking Eliza's spear, she battled Eleanor and succeeded in defeating her. Eleanor returned to human form and crystalized as she died, allowing Noelle to inherit her memories.

Aftermath

Noelle left the facility and explored the surface. Over the following months, the memories she inherited from Eleanor compelled her to travel to her eldest sister's childhood home. She also experienced moments where Eleanor's residual consciousness, which survived within her own mind, would take control of her body. First, it was only while she slept and dreamed, but her influence became gradually stronger.

Seeking answers for why she was experiencing this, Noelle returned to the facility and searched for anything that could give her a clue, but her search turned up no answers. Instead, however, she came across a motorcycle, and she made up her mind to satisfy her imprinted desire to travel to Eleanor's childhood home.

However, she triggered an alarm which set off the facility's automated defense system: android guards whose sole purpose was to protect the facility and keep knowledge of it secret, which meant that none of its specimens could be permitted to leave. Noelle was hunted the entire time as she fled on a long journey to the Kingdom of Night. Upon at last reaching her destination, Noelle succumbed to her injuries and crystalized as Eleanor and all of her other sisters had.

Two years later, in 6203, it was noted that androids from the Army of Humanity discovered the giant white crystal.[1]

Thanks for the pic of the garden—the kalanchoe look great! Your letters really help me enjoy days I can't leave my room. Dad works all the time because of me, so it must be rough for you alone at home. I'll try to get better as soon as I can. Love you!

A Fleeting Dream Ephemeral Memories Dear Mom,

Thanks for the letter. Sorry I couldn't write back last month—I'm sure Dad has told you already, but my symptoms aren't good. Still, the researchers are all working hard, so don't worry about me, okay?
