Singularities are a general term for individuals or objects that exert significant influence on the world and trigger branching phenomena. These phenomena occur when a singularity is present under conditions of sufficiently high magical particle concentration, referred to as maso, combined with the fulfillment of certain requirements. However, the specific nature of those requirements remains unknown.

Because the actions taken by a singularity can lead to alternate possibilities and different futures from the original world, Accord records each instance and witnesses the outcome of every diverging world.

• In [U]ndecided Option, the Shadowlord states that if he and Nier were to combine Grimoire Weiss and Noir's powers, they could create a new Branch. This occurs in one of the novel's two endings, further suggesting the Shadowlord is a Singularity, corroborated by Drag-on Dragoon: World Inside.^[3]
