Earth is a planet which was previously inhabited by humans before their effective extinction by a disease known as White Chlorination Syndrome. It serves as the main setting for the NieR series.
Characteristics
In the 27th century, the moon was fractured by an unknown event, resulting in a shift of the Earth's axis. The axis distortion caused a change in the Earth's normal day-night cycle, creating continual daytime in the area that would become known as the Kingdom of Day. The axis shift also led to the creation of the corresponding Kingdom of Night, where it is perpetually night.
Following the end of the 14th Machine War, the female Administrator, Her, of the Earth's quantum server absorbed the data of the damaged Red Girl after the fracturing of the machine network's ego. By assimilating the Red Girl's corrupted data, She was overcome with grief and hatred, and used her own reality-altering abilities to freeze both the Earth, including machines and androids, and time itself as well while using the Red Girl's powers to change the Earth's surface into a network of stone towers resembling the home planet of the machine lifeform's creators.
After the events of NieR Reincarnation, following the defeat of Her and the reincarnation of Fio to accompany her, both androids and machines have become unfrozen from Her's time-freeze and now inhabit the Earth again, though it is unknown how much organic life remains.
Story
The World of NieR
A series of Twitter posts detailing the world of NieR released during the launch of NieR Reincarnation.
The World of NieR ①: 2003 A.D.
A white giant and a red dragon suddenly appear in Shinjuku. After they battle, an unknown particle called Maso causes a strange disease to ravage the area.[1]
The World of NieR ②: 2016 A.D.
As the infected grow violent, countries around the world strengthen their militaries in response to the threat. Meanwhile, a Japanese research facility begins to study Maso, as well as possible weapons based off it.[2]
The World of NieR ③: 2053 A.D.
Project Gestalt is launched to combat the disease. Human souls are separated from their bodies, but soon thereafter grow unstable, run amok, and perish. Despite this, a stable consciousness is eventually found that allows the project to proceed.[3]
The World of NieR ⑤: 11937 A.D.
Unidentified objects emerge from outer space and begin deploying weapons known as machine lifeforms. The androids now living on Earth retreat to a space station known as the Bunker and begin work on a line of combat androids called YoRHa.[5]
The World of NieR ⑥: 11941 A.D.
The first combat operation is carried out by the experimental YoRHa units. Ultimately, all but one of the sixteen units are destroyed in battle.[6]Areas

Trivia
- It is unknown what the condition of the planet is after Her's time-freeze. Fio and Her visit an area described as a "world of pure white sand that stretches beyond the horizon," which may be either a desert or potentially the remains of the stone towers that were built around the world. Remnants of humanity, such as cars, signs, and other landmarks litter the area, described as looking "like bones."[9]
