Rose is a character from the YoRHa stage play and the YoRHa: Pearl Harbor Descent Record manga series. She also briefly appears in NieR:Automata Ver1.1a.

She is the Leader of the Resistance during the 8th Machine War that took place over 200 years before Ver1.1a.

Appearance

Rose has the appearance of a woman with long, dark blue hair styled in a high ponytail with straight-cut bangs and two long strands framing her face. She has a small, thin scar on her left cheekbone underneath pale blue eyes. She wears a large dark brown scarf wrapped around her neck, over a long-sleeved white tunic. She also has a green chest rig with multiple pouches, tan gloves, a tattered olive-colored cloak, camouflage-patterned pants tucked into tan boots, as well as dark grey knee guards.

Personality

As a leader, she can be resolute and even ruthless in doing what she deems necessary to protect her comrades when needed, such as considering using the surviving YoRHa squadron upon their arrival as bait for machines, or attempting to put down Lily when she was infected with the Logic Virus. She can also be strict and reprimanding, such as when she told No.2 to manage her team to prevent disorderly conflict.

However, she has a deeply compassionate and empathetic heart, taking the YoRHa squadron's side when she heard they were abandoned by Command just like the Resistance, and her righteousness leads her to help them with their mission despite the risks. In YoRHa, she shares the drive to protect the future of all androids from the threat of machines even after being abandoned by Command, with her even anticipating that she and her squadron may die. She is willing to disobey and attack her superiors without hesitation to protect those precious to her, such as when she saw Lily's abuse, even though this led to her desertion. She is trusting towards No.2 and her squad even though her comrades remained wary, and she has a willingness to accept her own shortcomings when she sees how No.2's open-mindedness and kindhearted personality prevented her from having to kill the infected Lily.

Like all androids, she has a programmed fervent love for humanity, so much so that she gave her squadron names so that they can communicate to each other like humans, contrary to standard android customs to only have model numbers unless they achieve meritorious accomplishments on the battlefield. That said, she and her Resistance fight to protect each other than for humanity or Command. Also contrary to most androids, she does not establish a chain of command and treats her squadron like a family rather than as subordinates, a practice that surviving members of her squad carry into the Resistance. She believes the purpose of her life is to protect her family, a trait she shares with No.2, and chastises the Red Girls who lack a purpose for their actions.

She cares deeply for her family, in which they all treat her like an elder sister. She extends this treatment to No.2's squad, offering to give them names and putting significant thought and care into each of them by choosing flowers that reflect their individual personalities. Her love and loyalty to her family has her protect Lily to the point of getting critically injured, to comfort and embrace the dying Sonia, and to shield No.2 at the cost of her life. In the process, she even willingly bites down on a machine core and infects herself just to give herself more strength to protect her family, and expresses happiness in being able to name No.2's squad before killing herself so that she doesn't harm anyone.

Story

Early Life

Rose saves Lily

In 11941, Rose and her squadron were members of the 8th Descent sent to fight the machine lifeforms by the Army of Humanity. After witnessing Lily be repeatedly abused by their commanding officer, Rose brutally beat her in retaliation, and when she attempted to turn herself in, her squad came to her defense and they instead defected, becoming the last survivors of the Resistance. Since then, Rose and her squad looked after each other like family, with Rose giving them names to symbolize their bond.

Rose and A2

About 200 years later, she and her team come across the survivors of No.2's squad during the Pearl Harbor Descent mission. After being briefed on their mission and No.2's squad saving Lily from a Logic Virus infection, she takes her chances with No.2's team and her team decides to help them. In that time, their respective teams get very close, with Rose even promising to name No.2's squad if they survive their mission. Rose and No.2 talk about their capabilities as leaders, and Rose, confiding in No.2 her own weakness, assures her of her strengths. Rose asks No.2 what is her purpose in life, and when No.2 says it's for her family, Rose says hers is the same.

Pearl Harbor Descent

Rose End Novel

When Rose, No.2, No.4, and Gerbera reach the server room on the 12th floor of Mount Ka'ala, they are welcomed by the Red Girls, who block their communications. They attempt to have them question their purpose before sending in a machine with over six horns. As Rose and Gerbera prepare to fight it, Gerbera shoots Rose in the arm, having been infected with a Logic Virus from the previous six-horned machine they fought prior. Before Gerbera can do any further harm, she bids Rose farewell and shoots herself. Rose entrusts the rest to No.2 and No.4, having taken pride in all of their fallen comrades' sacrifices, and blows herself up with the multi-horned machine using her reaction core.

YoRHa—VER. 1.05

In YoRHa—VER. 1.05, Rose is stabbed by an infected Gerbera. She comforts and embraces a dying Sonia before she faces the Red Girls. Her last words are that she found her purpose in life, and she questions if the Red Girls have any meaning to theirs before succumbing to her wounds, unable to reach them.

NieR:Automata Ver1.1a

Rose End

As the final stages of the mission are underway, after losing most of their teams, Rose, No.2, No.4, and Lily descend the elevator to the machine's server room. Rose asks No.2 if they, as androids, dream, wishing this was all just a nightmare. Protecting Lily, Rose gets critically injured, and begins to evacuate with her to safety. However, when No.2 and No.4 are about to die to their own controlled comrades, Rose sends Lily away on her own, preventing her from committing suicide, and entrusts her with her gun and their memory. She then bites down on a machine core and lets herself get infected with a Logic Virus in order to gain enough strength to shield No.2 from a fatal blow with her own body. She names No.2, No.4, No.16, and No.21, then calls them her family before shooting herself before she loses control from the virus.
